Pyrocat HD – A New Chapter

For over a year now there have been two developers that I have desperately wanted to try. Pyrocat HD and Diafine. Pyrocat HD for the detail it provides, and Diafine for supreme tonality range and long shelf life.

Recently I was lucky enough to get a 1-liter kit of Pyrocat HD. So far I have used it on Fomapan 100 and Ilford HP5+, both in 35mm, with dilutions ranging from the standard 1 +1 + 100 to a 2 + 2 + 300 semi-stand. Every process and give fantastic results. So much so that I have chosen Pyrocat to be one of my two “go to” developers.

Nikon N8008 | Ilford HP5+ EI 800 | Pyrocat HD 2 + 2 +100 semi-stand

I am so glad I finally have gotten around to using this developer, but also sad that it took me this long. Suffice it to say that it is one developer, along with D23, that will always be in stock and ready to use.

Thanks for stopping by! Do you use Pyrocat HD? I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.

God Bless and Happy Shooting!

  1. Tony – excellent results . What times did you settle on for 1+1+100 for Fomapan 100 and HP5? There is much variation on line, partly due to times for alt or silver printing , rotary or hand development.

Interested to see what you used and what process.

    1. Hi Andrew, thanks for stopping by!

The Foma 100 was rated at 100 and developed at 1 + 1 + 100 for 12 minutes at 68 degrees. I agitated for the first 30 seconds and then 10 seconds every minute after that. The roll of HP5 shot at the Metropark was rated at 800 and I did a 30-minute semi-stand at 2 + 2 + 100 at 70 degrees. I did continuous agitation for the first minute then at 10 and 20 minutes.

All films were developed in my Paterson System 4 two-reel tank using the twizzle stick. I will also add that my agitation is less “aggressive” with Pyrocat than it is with the other developers. Wherewith other developers I can usually get in 4-5 turns of the twizzle stick, with the Pyrocat I would only do 3. I’m not sure if this is the “proper” way of doing it but it seems to be working.

I hope this answers your question. If not, just let me know.
